Memoirs of a working class northerner
Brian Glover Saves My Life, Barry Hines Faces a Class Revolt and other stories
Ronnie Steele’s Kes Group raised all the money needed to pay for a
wonderful statue to honour their hero, the late Barry Hines, author of Kestrel for a Knave.
Barry and his friend and colleague Brian Glover, were very popular teachers at Longcar Central School, which Ronnie attended in the 1960s and so in this book he illustrates the brilliance of both educators in a
series of short stories.
When they were first published on social media they were so popular that Ronnie was encouraged to write other hilarious and often moving
stories about working class life,
growing up in Barnsley.
In November 2021 the director of Kes, Ken Loach, came to Barnsley to undertake the statue-unveiling in front of hundreds of local supporters.
